Japan's last-built five-story pagoda rising from rice paddies, linked by a 22km cycling trail.
The last five-story pagoda built in Japan (34.3 meters, Edo period) rises from a tableau of rice paddies in the Kibi Plain, an iconic rural landscape photographed through every season. The original 8th-century provincial temple was one of 60 ordered built nationwide by Emperor Shomu. Cycling the flat 22-kilometer Kibiji Trail connects it to other ancient burial mounds and shrines.
