Overview
A beachside sand bath where attendants bury you in naturally heated volcanic sand, like a warm sandy blanket.
On the shore of Beppu Bay, volcanic heat warms the beach sand to a toasty 40-50°C. Attendants in yukata guide you to a shallow trench, you lie down, and they shovel warm sand over your body up to the neck. The combination of warmth, weight, and the sound of waves is deeply relaxing. It's far less touristy than the similar experience in Ibusuki.
Local tips
You wear a yukata (provided) under the sand. Stay for 15-20 minutes, then rinse off in the indoor onsen. The whole combo is 1,050 yen.
