Overview
Historic hot spring district in Beppu with public and private baths operating since the early Edo period (1603-1867).
Beppu Onsen has been a popular hot spring area since the early Edo period (1603-1867). The main town stretches between JR Beppu Station and Kitahama Park on the coast. There are public and private hot spring facilities ranging from sleek and modern to traditional and retro, including sand baths and steam baths. One of the oldest and most famous hot spring spas is Takegawara Onsen, built in 1890, which includes hot springs and indoor sand baths. There are eight famous hot spring areas around Beppu, known as the Hatto Onsen, and seven boiling outdoor hot springs, called the Hells (jigoku) of Beppu.
Local tips
Wash thoroughly at the shower stations before entering the bath. This is non-negotiable etiquette. Bring a small towel but keep it out of the water.
