Beppu City Traditional Bamboo Crafts Center
別府市伝統竹細工伝統産業会館
Overview
Built in 1994, housing woven bamboo works that have been important handicrafts in Beppu for hundreds of years.
Beppu's bamboo work received Traditional Craft Product status from the Ministry of International Trade and Industry in 1979, and this center has promoted the craft since 1994. Two exhibit rooms cover bamboo as a material, the tools and techniques used, and the work of prominent local craftspeople. The center also maintains training rooms where young artisans develop their skills. Visitors can join hands-on workshops to make a simple flower basket or bamboo bells. A cafe and shop opened after a 2017 renovation lets you browse finished bamboo goods and pick up a piece to take home.
