Benesse House Museum
Overview
Tadao Ando hotel-and-museum hybrid where guests sleep alongside contemporary art installations.
The original Naoshima venue when Soichiro Fukutake first invited Tadao Ando to the island in 1992. Half hotel, half museum, with works by Bruce Nauman, Cy Twombly, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, and others integrated into the architecture. Day visitors can tour the museum sections; overnight guests have the run of the building after hours. The cliffside grounds also hold outdoor sculptures by Walter De Maria, Niki de Saint Phalle, and Yayoi Kusama.
Local tips
Stay a night if the budget allows; the after-dark gallery access is the museum's quiet trump card.
