The Basho-Seifu Historical Museum celebrates the enduring friendship between the famous haiku poet Matsuo Basho (1644–1694) and the wealthy local merchant Suzuki Seifu (1651–1721).
In 1689, the haiku poet Matsuo Basho passed through Obanazawa to visit his friend, the wealthy merchant Suzuki Seifu. That visit became part of Basho's famous travelogue 'Narrow Road to the Deep North,' one of the most celebrated works in Japanese literature. This museum, housed in a relocated late-Edo sake merchant's building, holds letters written by Basho himself alongside documents about Seifu's life and the Obanazawa sections of the journey. The second floor displays everyday artifacts from winter life in the region, giving context to what Basho encountered during his 156-day walk through northern Japan.
