Sub-alpine plateau at 1,622m with a steaming volcanic crater and alpine wildflower marshes.
At 1,622 meters, this sub-alpine plateau marks the midpoint of a volcanic mountain road named one of Japan's 100 Best Roads. Steam rises from Mount Azuma-Kofuji's crater, and a 10-minute climb reaches the rim with views of a turquoise crater lake. The surrounding marshlands bloom with alpine wildflowers in summer, while spring snow corridors tower several meters high on either side of the road.
