Awashima Shrine

Located on the border between Matama and Kakaji in Bungotakada and dates back to 1625. It is unique in that it is located within a cave that extends into the surrounding sea. Sukunahikona no Mikoto is enshrined there, and was originally worshipped as a deity of medicine and was believed to offer blessings related to pregnancy and childbirth. Today, the shrine is especially known for blessings related to marriage, and many visitors come to pray for a happy and healthy marital relationship. From nearby Awashima Park, visitors can take a leisurely stroll down to the shrine, passing by a monument known as Yui which symbolizes the fulfillment of love.
