Awa Sand Pillars
阿波の土柱
Overview
Ancient geological formation of tall sandstone pillars with cliffside trails & observatories.
The Awa Sand Pillars (Dochu) are striking geological formations created over millions of years as rain and wind eroded layers of compressed sand and gravel into tall, jagged columns and cliff faces. Walking the cliffside trails and observation platforms gives you close-up views of these otherworldly pillars, which shift in color from grey to warm ochre depending on the light. The formations continue to change shape year by year, so what you see is always slightly different from what came before. A short loop trail takes about 30 to 45 minutes and offers fine views over the surrounding Tokushima countryside.
