Overview
Shrine housing Imperial Regalia in 19 hectares of ancient forest, with a treasure hall of 4,000 artifacts.
Second in prestige only to Ise Grand Shrine, Atsuta Jingu enshrines the Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi, one of Japan's three Imperial Regalia. Yet most tourists skip it for Nagoya Castle, leaving the 19-hectare camphor and oak forest eerily quiet. The shrine's treasure hall displays over 4,000 artifacts including swords, masks, and ancient mirrors. The adjacent Miyakishimen restaurant serves the region's signature flat-noodle kishimen.
Local tips
One of Japan's most important shrines, housing the Kusanagi sword. The kishimen noodle shop inside the grounds is a local institution.
