Overview

An Izu Peninsula hot spring resort where steaming towers mark geothermal vents, also home to a tropical alligator park.

A hot spring resort town on the eastern coast of the Izu Peninsula, instantly recognizable by the columns of steam rising from geothermal vents throughout the town. The area's abundant hot water emerges at nearly 100°C, feeding numerous ryokan and public bathhouses with mineral-rich waters. Atagawa is also home to the Atagawa Banana Crocodile Park, a tropical zoo and botanical garden heated entirely by natural hot spring water, housing crocodiles, alligators, and tropical plants. The seafront location offers ocean views from many open-air baths, and the area serves as a convenient base for exploring the eastern Izu coastline.

Local tips

Wash thoroughly at the shower stations before entering the bath. This is non-negotiable etiquette. Bring a small towel but keep it out of the water.
