Daikanbo Lookout
viewpoint
大観峰
The ultimate viewpoint over Aso's massive caldera, the outer rim peaks look like a sleeping Buddha at dawn.
From the northern rim of Aso's enormous caldera (the world's largest), this lookout provides a jaw-dropping panorama of all five peaks. In early morning, the peaks are said to resemble a sleeping Buddha (Nebutabutsu). Sea-of-clouds mornings in autumn are spectacular. The drive along the caldera rim is one of Japan's greatest road trips.
Arrive before sunrise for a chance to see the unkai (sea of clouds) filling the caldera. Autumn mornings have the highest probability.
