Traditional hot spring in Aomori offering relaxation and rejuvenation.

Seaside hot spring town along the shore of Mutsu Bay, about 30 minutes by train from central Aomori. The waters here are sodium-calcium chloride springs, known for warming you to the bone and soothing tired muscles. Several ryokan and public bathhouses offer ocean-facing baths where you can soak while watching fishing boats drift by. The nearby Asamushi Aquarium and a pleasant boardwalk along the coast make it easy to spend a half-day combining a bath with a leisurely walk.

Local tips

Wash thoroughly at the shower stations before entering the bath. This is non-negotiable etiquette. Bring a small towel but keep it out of the water.
