Overview
One of Tokyo's three great festivals, known for its wild portable shrine parades.
Held on the third weekend of May at Asakusa Shrine, Sanja Matsuri is a celebration of the three founders of Sensoji Temple. It is famous for its intense energy, as nearly 100 'mikoshi' (portable shrines) from the surrounding neighborhoods are paraded through the streets toward the shrine to be blessed. The highlight is Sunday morning, when the three massive main mikoshi are brought out. The atmosphere is loud and festive, featuring traditional music, dancers, and participants in traditional festival garb. It attracts over two million visitors over three days, making it one of the largest cultural events in Japan.
Local tips
Purify your hands at the temizuya before approaching the main hall. Left hand first, then right, then pour water into your left hand to rinse your mouth.
