Overview
16th-century pottery kiln across the river from Byodo-in; tea-ceremony bowls in the muted Asahi-yaki style.
A pottery kiln founded in 1599, producing the muted Asahi-yaki style tea ceremony bowls that take their name from the dawn-light tone the clay achieves after firing. The current 16th-generation kiln-master Matsubayashi Hosai runs the family operation across the Uji River from Byodo-in. The on-site gallery shows historical pieces; the workshop is visible from the gallery's viewing window. Bowls range 5,000 yen to several million for master pieces.
Local tips
Closed Tuesdays. Pottery demonstrations run twice daily by appointment; the workshop's Sano-bashi side entrance is a 5-minute walk from Uji Bridge.
