Arita Ceramic Museum
有田陶磁美術館
Overview
The Arita Ceramic Museum is located in an old warehouse building that was originally built in 1874.
Housed in an 1874 warehouse, this was the first museum in Saga Prefecture when it opened in 1954 and was then only the third ceramics-only museum in the world. The original wooden display cases, cabinets, and lamps from the founding year are still in use, refurbished since. After the nearby Tashiro Family Western-style House was designated a National Important Cultural Property in 2018, the collection shifted its focus to the Meiji era, since both buildings date to the 1870s. The standout piece is a large sometsuke blue-and-white plate from the 1830s to 1850s depicting the entire Arita ware production process during the Edo period, designated a Saga Prefectural Important Cultural Property.
