Arata Shrine

Arata Shrine on Tokunoshima is a place of worship tied to ancient indigenous religious traditions, where the surrounding forest was once considered entirely sacred. Today it enshrines a deity associated with fertility and safe childbirth, and the town of Isen, where the shrine sits, has the highest birth rate on the island. Tokunoshima itself has long been known for its high birth rate, earning it the informal name 'Island of Treasured Children.' In the past, worshippers brought sand from nearby Kinenbama Beach to place at the sanctuary. The setting is quiet and deeply local, with little signage and a strong sense of community faith.
