An otherworldly forest pathway lined with towering bamboo stalks, creating one of Kyoto's most photographed scenes.
The bamboo path at Arashiyama runs about 500 meters from the edge of Tenryu-ji Temple toward Okochi-Sanso Villa, flanked by stalks that reach over 20 meters. The wind moving through them produces a rustling sound the Japanese Environment Ministry has listed among the country's 100 notable soundscapes. The grove has existed for centuries and was once a retreat for Kyoto's aristocracy. Entry is free and it is open around the clock, so arriving at dawn gives you a quieter version of the experience. Combine it with Tenryu-ji's garden or the Togetsukyo Bridge for a full morning in Arashiyama.
Local tips
Arrive before 7 AM or the path is shoulder-to-shoulder. The Okochi-Sanso villa garden at the end is worth the entry.
