Aoshi Shrine has mostly retained its original appearance for almost two and a half centuries.
Aoshi Shrine in Nagaoka has stood largely unchanged since the Makino domain lords built it in 1781, modeling it after the famous Nikko Tosho-gu. It survived World War II air raids that destroyed many of the city's other shrines. Behind the main hall, gravestones of twelve generations of Nagaoka's daimyo line a quiet stone path. Today families bring children for Shichi-Go-San in November, weddings take place here from spring through autumn, and anyone is welcome to approach the altar, toss a coin, bow twice, and clap twice before offering a silent prayer.
Purify your hands at the temizuya before approaching the main hall. Left hand first, then right, then pour water into your left hand to rinse your mouth.
