Aoni Onsen
青荷温泉
Overview
Barely on a path, this onsen is an oasis of tranquility rarely found in today's digital age of connectivity.
Lamp-lit ryokan deep in the mountains of Kuroishi, Aomori, accessible only via the inn's shuttle on a winding forest road. There is no electric lighting anywhere in the building, so oil lamps cast a warm, flickering glow through rooms, hallways, and the four outdoor baths day and night. The mineral-rich baths, set beside a mountain stream, are open 24 hours. Communal meals of mountain cuisine include foraged vegetables, river fish, and Aomori specialties. The experience is specifically about stillness and disconnection, and the lamps make even simple tasks like finding your room feel different from anywhere else.
