安養院
Temple with Hojo Masako tomb along azalea path, guarded by 700-year-old kusamaki tree natural monument.
A small but historically rich Kamakura temple that houses the tomb of Hojo Masako, the formidable wife of Japan's first shogun who became one of the most powerful women in medieval Japanese history. The grounds are known for their azaleas and rhododendrons, which create a colorful canopy along the approach path in spring. A 700-year-old kusamaki (Japanese podocarpus) tree stands guard over the temple and is registered as a natural monument. The quiet atmosphere and modest admission of 100 yen make it a gentle pause between Kamakura's larger temple complexes.
