Overview

Historic restaurant founded in 1901, famous for its grilled conger eel rice box (anagomeshi).

Founded in 1901 near Miyajimaguchi Station, Ueno is the originator of anagomeshi, grilled conger eel over seasoned rice, and remains the definitive place to try this Miyajima specialty. The eel is grilled over charcoal with a sweet soy glaze until slightly caramelized, then laid over rice that has been cooked in eel stock for deep flavor. You can eat in the traditional dining room or grab a takeout bento box for the ferry ride to Miyajima. Expect a queue during lunch peak, but the line moves steadily and the bento option is a smart workaround.
