秋吉台国定公園
Japan's largest karst plateau features 600-year-old annual grass burning rituals and spectacular Akiyoshido cave.
Akiyoshidai stretches across Mine in Yamaguchi as Japan's largest karst plateau, a rolling grassland scattered with limestone outcroppings that look like pale teeth pushing up through the green. Below the surface, Akiyoshido Cave extends for over 10 kilometers, with about 1 kilometer open to visitors on a lit, paved path. Inside, stalactites, stalagmites, and underground streams fill chambers of different scales. Back above ground, trails cross the plateau with good views of the formations. The combination of grassland hiking and underground cave exploration makes this a genuinely varied half-day. The cave entrance is at the base of the plateau, a short walk from the parking area.
