Akiya Coast

The Akiya Coast on the northern end of Nakanoshima Island is a kilometer of red volcanic cliffs and weathered rock formations, the color coming from iron-rich scoria (volcanic rock) that oxidized as it was ejected into the air 2.8 million years ago. Wind and wave erosion have carved arches, hollows, and shapes with local names like Folding-screen Rock and Washbasin Rock. One islet has a natural heart-shaped hole visible from shore. A paved walkway leads to a small beach recreation area with camping spots, restrooms, and picnic tables. The clear offshore waters are popular for diving, particularly for horned turban snails (sazae).
