Overview
Nine artisan workshops in a mountain village where visitors try kokeshi painting, indigo dyeing, and papermaking.
This cluster of working artisan studios in the Akiu hot spring valley preserves traditional Miyagi crafts including kokeshi dolls, lacquerware, and Sendai tansu woodwork. Unlike tourist-oriented workshops, these are real artisan homes where craftspeople live and work. Hands-on experiences cost as little as 500 yen, and the quiet riverside setting makes it a meditative counterpoint to downtown Sendai.
