A hot spring town 30 minutes from Sendai by bus, set in the Rairaikyo Gorge. Akiu Waterfall (55 meters) is a 20-minute walk from the main street. Most ryokans along the gorge offer day-use bathing (¥500-1,000). The Akiu Craft Village, 10 minutes further by bus, has working studios for Sendai lacquerware and kokeshi doll-making with demonstration sessions on weekends.
