Akita Dog Visitor Center
秋田犬の里
Overview
Meet real Akita dogs at their birthplace, learn about the breed that inspired Hachiko, and browse dog-themed souvenirs.
This center in Odate, the Akita breed's original home, is where you can meet real Akita dogs in person during opening hours for photos and supervised interaction. Exhibits trace the breed's history as mountain hunting dogs in Tohoku, and tell the story of Hachiko, the Akita who waited at Shibuya Station for his owner every day for nearly a decade after his owner's death. The building itself resembles the old Odate Station where Hachiko once waited. The gift shop carries everything from Akita plushies to local crafts, and it is genuinely delightful for dog lovers of any age.
