Overview

A compact morning market near Akita Station where fishmongers, pickle vendors, and hatahata fish specialists cater to locals doing daily shopping.

No-frills covered market a few minutes' walk from Akita Station, primarily serving local residents. The stalls specialize in regional products: hatahata (sandfish), Akita's signature winter fish; handmade tsukemono pickles including the famous iburigakko (smoked daikon); seasonal mountain vegetables; and Kiritanpo rice sticks. Early morning is the busiest time, and several stalls serve simple breakfasts of grilled fish and miso soup.

Local tips

Buy iburigakko (smoked pickled daikon) vacuum-packed as a souvenir. It keeps well and is one of Akita's most distinctive flavors. The fish stall near the back entrance grills whole hatahata on the spot in winter.
