Overview
Renowned confectionery established in 1854, famous for 'Karukan' (steamed yam cake).
Established in 1854, Akashiya is Kagoshima's most venerable confectionery and the definitive place to buy karukan, a light, subtly sweet steamed cake made from wild mountain yam, a local specialty. The texture is unique: spongy, slightly sticky, and delicately flavored, unlike anything else in the Japanese sweets canon. Individual pieces start around a few hundred yen, and gift boxes make excellent souvenirs. The shop itself is elegant but approachable, the staff will happily let you sample before you buy.
