Akashi Castle Ruins
castle
明石城跡
Hilltop ruins with original yagura towers overlooking the Akashi Strait, where Miyamoto Musashi once designed gardens.
Akashi Castle was built in 1619 by the Ogasawara clan on orders from the Tokugawa shogunate, positioned to control the sea route between Osaka and western Japan. The main keep was destroyed long ago, but two original corner turrets survive and are designated Important Cultural Properties, making Akashi one of a small number of castles in Japan with genuine surviving Edo-period structures rather than concrete reconstructions. The castle sits within a park that includes walking paths, cherry trees, and a botanical garden. An observation deck in the park provides views toward the Akashi Strait and the suspension bridge. The overall site is relaxed and not heavily visited, which makes it a pleasant alternative to busier castle towns nearby.
