Overview

Takes time to reach Akasawa, but mountain vistas that seem to go on for eternity reward the effort.

Nestled deep in the mountains of Hayakawa, one of Japan's least populated towns. Akasawa is a tiny hamlet of traditional thatched-roof farmhouses surrounded by terraced rice fields and soaring peaks. Getting here requires commitment (narrow mountain roads and limited public transport), but the reward is a genuinely remote landscape that feels untouched by modern development. The village offers a handful of guesthouses where you can stay overnight and experience rural mountain life. Autumn colors are exceptional here, and the star-filled night sky rivals any in Honshu.
