Overview

Akan-Mashu National Park covers 91,413 hectares (914.13 sq km) and is split into the Mashu area in the east, encompassing Lake Kussharo and Lake Mashu, and the A.

The Akankohan Eco-museum Center sits south of Lake Akan at the edge of Akan-Mashu National Park and serves as the main information and natural history introduction for the area. The entry-level Information Zone posts current volcanic activity levels on Mt. Meakan and brown bear sighting reports. The Activity Zone has an aerial floor map of the park and an aquarium with marimo algae balls, kokanee salmon, and the critically endangered Sakhalin taimen. The 1.5-kilometer Bokke Nature Trail leads from the center to a pier on Lake Akan through conifer forest, passing bubbling mud pools called bokke, an Ainu-language term meaning 'to boil over.' Snowshoes and long boots can be rented at reception.
