Akagi Senbon Sakura
landmark
赤城南面千本桜
Ranked among Japan's top 100 hanami spots with sprawling cherry trees creating mesmerizing spring displays.
About 1,400 cherry trees line a 1.3-kilometer road on the southern slopes of Mount Akagi in Maebashi, ranked among Japan's top 100 cherry blossom viewing spots. The trees bloom in early April, slightly later than lowland Tokyo, making this a useful second-chance destination when city blossoms have already fallen. A canopy effect forms along the avenue, and festival food stalls set up at peak bloom. Evening illumination extends viewing into the night hours. In autumn the same hillside sees vivid amaryllis blooming in red clusters beneath the green canopy. The elevated hillside location provides views across the Kanto Plain on clear days.
