Akabane Ichibangai
street
赤羽一番街
A sprawling arcade of standing bars and izakayas where regulars start drinking from noon with not a tourist in sight.
Akabane's Ichibangai shopping arcade transforms by late afternoon into one of Tokyo's most authentic drinking districts. The standing bars (tachinomi) and tiny izakayas here serve generous portions of grilled offal, oden, and sashimi at prices that feel like a time warp. Several establishments have been family-run for decades, and the local crowd skews older and fiercely loyal.
Maruken near the arcade entrance has been serving motsu-nikomi (stewed offal) since the 1950s. Order it with a chuhai for the full Akabane experience.
