Ago Bay

英虞湾
Popular bay area with several islands, train access & a history as an innovator in cultured pearls.
Ago Bay's jagged ria coastline on the southern Shima Peninsula is dotted with small islands and the wooden rafts of pearl farms, continuing a tradition started here by Mikimoto Kokichi in 1893. Sightseeing cruises weave through the calm water past oyster beds and cultivation rafts while guides explain the pearl farming process. Above the bay, the Yokoyama Observatory offers a wide view of the island-studded water, especially at sunset when the surface reflects orange and purple. The surrounding Ise-Shima National Park adds hiking, fresh seafood dining, and shrine visits, and the area gained international attention when G7 leaders gathered here for the 2016 summit.
