21_21 Design Sight

21_21 Design Sight sits in Tokyo's Roppongi district, created through a collaboration between architect Tadao Ando and fashion designer Issey Miyake. Most of the exhibition space is sunken below ground beneath a dramatic folded steel roof that Ando designed to evoke a single piece of cloth. Exhibitions rotate several times a year and explore design's intersection with art, technology, and everyday life, covering subjects as varied as water, chocolate, and athletic shoes. The museum sits within the Tokyo Midtown complex, and its approach to design as a way of thinking rather than decoration makes it a genuinely refreshing complement to the more traditional galleries nearby.
