Nishi Park
park
西公園
North Fukuoka park near Ohori, among the city's premier cherry blossom viewing spots each spring.
Nishi Park runs along the east bank of the Hirose River between Jozenji-dori and Aoba-dori, with a riverbank strolling path, lawns for sitting, and play areas for children. Parts of the park look toward Aobayama hill, where Aoba Castle was built in the early seventeenth century. Near the northern edge, a steam locomotive retired in 1968 and a kokeshi-shaped tower make for unexpected landmarks. The park hosts the Sendai Tanabata Fireworks Festival and the Jozenji Street Jazz Festival each year, and its cherry trees draw big crowds in spring.
