temple
大聖院
Miyajima's most important temple, hidden in the forested hillside above the crowds with 500 unique Rakan statues.
While tourists flock to Itsukushima Shrine, this Shingon temple at the base of Mount Misen goes largely unvisited. Founded in 806, it houses an eternal flame said to have burned since Kobo Daishi's time. The 500 stone Rakan statues, each with a unique expression and many wearing hand-knitted caps, line the pathways through the moss-covered grounds.
